Doug Bixby is the new senior pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church, in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was recently called to this imperfect church after serving 15 years as the pastor of another imperfect church, the Salem Covenant Church in Washington, Connecticut. He is author of two books. The Honest to God Church: A Pathway to God’s Grace and Challenging the Church Church Monster: From Conflict to Community. Both of these books are related to the fact that all of our churches are imperfect. He knows they are imperfect because they consist of imperfect people.
Bixby believes that a perfection myth has plagued the church for generations, and that the only way to get beyond this perfection myth is by confessing that we are imperfect. He believes that there is a gap between the way things are and the way things ought to be in our world, our churches, our families, and in our individual lives. He also believes in God’s love which is the only perfect thing in our world.
His mission in life is to help other churches and individuals to realize that God’s perfect love is the only thing that can help to move us forward, but that neither we nor our churches will be made perfect until we get to heaven. Churches that perpetuate the perfection myth are those congregations that force people to believe that they need to pretend to be perfect, even though they are not.
Doug Bixby is also a conference speaker and a church consultant. You may contact him with any requests, questions, or proposals you may have.
